The concept of “Shut In” is promising, I suppose, but the execution here is pretty much a total botch from start to finish. Good thing that a raging ice storm is bearing down on where she lives because absolutely nothing strange or bizarre would possibly happen when she was cut off from the outside world, right? While her psychiatrist friend suggests that she is suffering from the effects of parasomnia as the result of what has happened with both Stephen and Tom, she is convinced that something else entirely is going on. A search for Tom goes on in earnest, and Mary is crushed with guilt over what has happened until strange things begin happening around the house. Before she can do much of anything, he just as quickly takes off into the frigid evening again and cannot be found. One night, one of her more troubled patients, a young deaf boy named Tom (Jacob Tremblay from “Room”) turns up on her doorstep. Her Skype sessions with another shrink (Oliver Platt) are not helping. Six months later, Mary is caring for Stephen at home by herself, and, while she loves him, the pressure is clearly getting to her. As the story opens, a horrible car crash has killed her husband and left 18-year-old stepson Stephen (Charlie Heaton of “Stranger Things”) paralyzed from the neck down and unable to communicate. Watts plays Mary Portman, a child psychologist who lives and works in a remote corner of rural Maine. Frankly, the most surprising thing about the entire enterprise is that the wonderful actress Naomi Watts was somehow roped into starring in it, despite offering nothing of value for someone of her talents except a paycheck. The next hour or so meandering around while telling a story consisting of elements borrowed wholesale from other, better sources before arriving at the kind of “shocking” final twist that is so ludicrously conceived and executed that you wonder how the filmmakers ever expected to get away with it. It is a thriller that starts off at a molasses-like pace and spends Night Shyamalan, as made by people whose knowledge of his oeuvre is based only upon everything from the last ten minutes of “Signs” on. Not good on "non-mechanical special attractions.“Shut In” feels like an attempt to follow in the precise footsteps of M. DeWitt's six-year contract required him to respect the rights of ownership of those already settled in the area. Its boundaries were vaguely defined on the basis of inaccurate maps as the right bank of the Arroyo de la Vaca (Lavaca River) beginning at a point ten leagues from the coast (the government forbade all colonization within ten leagues of the Gulf Coast), running up the river to the Bexar-Nacogdoches road ( see OLD SAN ANTONIO ROAD) and then up the road to a point two leagues west of the Guadalupe River (approximately the divide between the Guadalupe and San Antonio rivers), then extending parallel to the Guadalupe River to the Paraje de las Mosquitos (a point again ten leagues from the coast), thence returning to the Lavaca River. DeWitt's colony was to be adjacent to and southwest of Austin's grant. Austin's influence, together with Baron de Bastrop's helped DeWitt to petition the Mexican government successfully on April 7, 1825, for an empresario contract to settle "four hundred industrious Catholic families.known to be respectable and industrious," and also any equally respectable families of Mexican nationals who "shall come to settle with us." The government approved the grant on April 15 in Saltillo, Coahuila. He was inspired to try again after the passage of the new federal colonization law of 1824 ( see MEXICAN COLONIZATION LAWS) and after having met Austin, with whom he continued to have a close relationship. Austin's success, DeWitt petitioned the Mexican government to become an empresario as early as 1822, but was frustrated in his attempt. DeWitt's colony, one of the major colonies in the settlement of Texas, was established by Green DeWitt and James Kerr in 1825. So if you’re in the US, you don’t have to worry about any commission based fees at all! As mentioned above, Bitpay Card doesn’t charge any commission based fees other than the 3.00% to cover the cost of currency conversion outside the US. Usually, however, you can go to a bank to withdraw higher amounts in a more efficient manner.įurthermore, the most important fee of them all, the commission on spending. In such scenarios, in order to withdraw a larger amount you need to withdraw several times, thus triggering the fixed fee each time. This might be disadvantageous in countries where the normal ATM-machines only allow smaller withdrawals (USD 20 for instance). There is a fee of 3.00% to cover the cost of currency conversion outside the US, but that’s it in terms of commission based fees.ĪTM-usage results in a fee of USD 2.50 on the withdrawn amount (in the US, outside the US the fee is USD 3.00). This card has no monthly fees and the issuance fee is a quite average USD 10.00. There are cards with lower fees out there, but definitely also cards with higher fees. This means that the fees with this card is not a disadvantage to using it. We think that Bitpay Card charges competitive fees. The following is a picture of the card (unfortunately a bit blurry, but it's the best we have found to this date): US-based holders of the Bitpay Card can now connect it to the Apple Pay app and make payments with cryptos that will be converted into fiat money. On 13 February 2021, BitPay Card announced that it had added support for Apple Pay. This is of course a great advantage, seeing that Mastercard (and VISA) are the most accepted cards in the world. Enhanced security is also self-explanatory, and worldwide refers to the number of different places you can use it or withdraw money from it.īitpay Card is a Mastercard, meaning that you can use the card at any point of payment that accepts Mastercard. Flexibility is a bit more difficult to understand, but we interpret it as meaning that the Bitpay card makes you a flexible person in terms of your available payment methods. Instant reloads is quite self-explanatory, it refers to the fact that it is easy for you to load the card through the wallet included in the Bitpay app. The company behind the Bitpay Card lists the following items as their primary advantages: instant reloads, flexibility, enhanced security and worldwide. Bitpay has illustrated this straight-forward process by the following graphic on its site: You get the app (on AppStore or Google Play), you load the Bitpay wallet in the app, and you then ask for a card to be issued. The process for getting the card is quite standard. With respect to fiat currencies, Bitpay Card supports only USD. General informationīitpay Card primarily supports Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, but will most likely support even more cryptocurrencies in the future. This is a review of Bitpay Card, one of the crypto debit cards out there. Well, through the use of a cryptocurrency debit card, you can. A common argument for regular money (also known as fiat currency) as opposed to cryptocurrency is that you can’t use cryptocurrency to buy groceries and other everyday items. Meanwhile, Donald Trump was in Trump Tower…” As though he’s in there in some dark room sneaking around, lurking and studying tapes, plotting and conspiring to take over the world! (sinister whisper) “Meanwhile, Donald Trump was in Trump Tower taking it all in, plotting strategy to destroy everything we’ve built.” So let’s get started here. I am blamed for taking them all out.īut the real problem with all that is that I set the stage for Trump, who, while all this was going on - and you’ll hear ’em say (sinister whisper) “Meanwhile, Donald Trump was in Trump Tower studying thousands of hours of Rush Limbaugh and talk radio. In the episode that aired last night, I, your host, am accused of essentially ruining the Obama presidency and ruining the Republican establishment. We’re gonna start here with the audio sound bites from the second half of a four-hour documentary on PBS Frontline last night. Okay, popular demand requests, emails are coming in. I’m not gonna have a chance to play all of them because it would take up too much time. I take them all out, and, in the process, set the stage for Trump who once again, it is said, spent hours and hours studying talk radio so he could take over the world. But not just that, I also destroyed the Republican establishment. Part 2 was last night, and in the episode last night, I, your host, Rush Limbaugh, am alleged to have basically ruined the Obama presidency. Now, they only mention my name once, but I was in every sound bite that they played, every clip of the opposition to Obama. But at every turn, our young first African-American president was thwarted by me. Obama tried, and worked harder than anybody ever had to unite the country and to rebuild the economy, to save health care and jobs. RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, remember yesterday we had some sound bites from the PBS show Frontline, the documentary by a filmmaker on Obama presidency, a retrospective, and the narrator? The essential theme was that Obama was one of greatest presidents ever but he was held back by me.
Still others see on the horizon more extreme cold or harsher winter storms. For some it will include higher winds and greater flooding for others it will be more droughts, heat waves, and wildfires. 9 But not all hospitals face the same future. Given projected changes to global average temperatures, precipitation patterns, and sea levels in the coming decades, health care facilities can expect new and heightened threats from natural disasters and extreme weather. For access and supplies, they rely heavily on public transportation infrastructure, which can be shut down abruptly by a disaster. 8 Hospitals consume more power and water than most other buildings and businesses, so disruptions in power and water supplies can have substantial impacts on operability. Guenther and Balbus recognized that hospitals have special needs relative to many other buildings, just as they also have great responsibilities. So she and colleague John Balbus, a senior advisor for public health with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), decided to fill that gap. 7īut few of these improvements were targeted toward hospitals, says Robin Guenther, a New York City–based architect and expert on sustainable health care facilities. 6 The city’s new Building Resiliency Task Force subsequently translated lessons from the storm into building code modifications designed to reduce future losses from extreme weather events. New York City was no exception after Sandy, which caused some $19 billion in economic losses across the five boroughs. In the aftermath of disaster, local municipalities typically reflect on what went right and what went wrong. 4 Perhaps remarkably, no patients died as a result of the closures and evacuations. 3 The hospital suffered nearly $1 billion in damages, 1 remained fully closed for two months, and went without an emergency room for a year and a half. 2 The hardest hit was NYU Langone Medical Center, where patients were evacuated down a dark stairway after power systems failed. 1 Among them was Bellevue, the nation’s oldest public hospital, which saw its first sustained closure since opening in 1736. Hurricane Sandy forced the evacuation of more than 6,400 patients from six hospitals and 31 residential care facilities. |
